Catholic Young Writer Award 2023

Sponsored by the Catholic Union of Great Britain Charitable Trust

This project is open to young Catholics in Years 9-11 of secondary school in the UK and all pupils in those years in UK Catholic secondary schools. There is a cash prize of £60 for the best essay, plus books. A number of runner-up prizes (books) are also awarded. Deadline for entries: July 10th 2023. Results announced: October 2023.

To enter, simply follow the instructions below:

Note to pupils: Visit a Catholic church – it can be your local parish or any other church or cathedral you have chosen for this project. Then write a letter to a friend who has asked about what you might find in a Catholic church and what happens there. Your essay should include information on:

  • The Mass
  • The Tabernacle
  • Confessionals
  • The Stations of the Cross
  • Statues of Mary and of saints

Give the full name of the church and the date of your visit, and whether your visit included Mass or some other event/activity (eg Benediction, baptism etc). You can add other information about the church, eg its history and any specific features of interest.

Your essay should show evidence of having consulted the Scriptures, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and other relevant material. All sources, including websites accessed, should be listed at the end of your essay.
Essays can be handwritten or produced on a computer. Please make a copy of your essay before sending it.
